The region of Abruzzo was relatively unknown until the expansion of the low cost airlines. This lovely region is situated in a central position down the length of Italy almost level with Rome, but on the opposite coast with the Adriatic forming its border to the east, and the Apennine peaks to the west. This provides Abruzzo with the advantage of both mountains and good ski resorts and the sea with 130kms of Adriatic coastline.
It is one of the most sparsely populated areas of Italy and therefore you may be surprised to find it has an excellent infrastructure of road, rail and airport links. Whilst Pescara provides the main airport for the region, with regular flights from the UK and Europe, access to Abruzzo is also available from nearby Ancona and with the excellent road and rail structure, Rome is only a couple of hours away. If you are looking to choose your Italian property and want great value for money and less tourists, this region could be perfect.
Abruzzo National Park is one of the most important in all of Europe. Nearby is the Maiella National Park, along with several other regional parks. Flora and fauna abound in these protected areas, where thick forests and flowering meadows give way to barren high plains and snow-capped granite peaks. Europe’s southernmost glacier, the Calderone, extends from Corino Grande to Corno Piccolo, in the shadow of Gran Sasso, the tallest peak on the Italian peninsula.
Abruzzo is known for strong flavors and strong hospitality. Peperoncino (hot red pepper) is used to flavor many dishes, and a favorite is pasta with aglio, olio, and peperoncino (garlic, olive oil and hot red pepper). This first course is often followed with “agnello all’arrabbiata” (angry lamb) and to top off the spicy meal guests are frequently offered a “digestive” called “Centerbe di Tocco Casauria” made with more than one hundred herbs from the Maiella and other mountains in Abruzzo. The cuisine of Abruzzo is divided between that of the sea and the mountains. The first has the classic “brodetto” as a principal dish, with other dishes including fried fish and fish sauces often served with pasta, as well as fresh-water fish, mountain trout, and river shrimp.
The intense red wine of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (made from the Montepulciano grape and not to be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano) lends itself beautifully to the popular lamb dishes, whilst another D.O.C. wine, the dry white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is excellent with any fish dishes.
With such a varied landscape from lovely sandy beaches through to the mountainous areas, the choice of properties will obviously reflect this. In the coastal towns of Pescara, Silvi, Alba Adriatica with Collonella just a few kms from the sea, you can buy Italian real estate such as seaside apartments and village houses. Slightly inland, in the ancient town of Citta Sant’Angelo you can buy lovely apartments in restored palazzi as well as town houses. If the rural lifestyle is for you there is plenty of choice in the surrounding with property to restore with land or a new style villa.
